The Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) is the only UK charity concerned exclusively in promoting the humane treatment of all food animals worldwide, including cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, fish and minority species such as deer, in markets, during transport, at slaughter.
This session will give an overview of the work of the HSA and how the charity supports smallholders and livestock producers in caring for their animals. We will introduce dealing with on-farm emergencies, and brief guidance will be given on stunning and killing livestock for home consumption, ensuring methods are carried out humanely and in line with best practice.
The session will also provide a short outline of seasonal and small-scale poultry production, covering the licensing and training requirements that apply to those processing their own birds. Finally, we will share how HSA is continuing to develop its training opportunities, with the aim of providing smallholders and producers with clear, accessible, and practical support to improve animal welfare.
There will be ample opportunity at the end of the session for any questions but also visit our stall at any time of the day to talk to the team.
